Not too many guitarists play a 10 lb. Les Paul sitting down...Les Paul & Robert Fripp are the only ones I've seen! lol

Well you said "first", so it would have to be Carlos Santana ("one chain don't make no prison...")

But I am particularly impressed that Tony Karol mentioned Steve Morse. I knew Steve to be a guitar-God long before he was officially worshipped by anyone. Must have seen The Dixie Dregs 15 times before anyone even paid them any attention. Some of their early concerts rival Woodstock on terms of drug use, too.

Today I am getting into Country because I can't plan what today's bands play. Would have to know more than 10 chords

First Guitar hero, tie between:
- Carlos Santana; and
- Eric Clapton

Here's a couple I don't think were mentioned:

- Don Ross (Alain I thought you would have listed him)
- Randy Bachman (Guess Who)
- Alex Liefson (Rush)

Al Di Meola -- so who likes listening to scales played in 128th notes?

Nick Lucas...okay, just kidding! I'm not quite that old.

My first guitar hero was Chester Atkins, CGP. The first that made me realize that regular folks could play too were George and John of The Beatles.

I came back to this thread because I don't remember anyone listing

Duane Allman & Dickey Betts

till I saw Mauel's post. MAN, No Way Out and Stormy Monday on Fillmore East are epic.

I also forgot a player who should be in the mix that was very inspirational to me and I'm sure to others. I don't think he's been mentioned yet.

Ever since his beginnings w/ the Yardbirds...
A friend of mine used to own Rik Emmetts Framus .. and a bunch of his other stuff too (Rik lives about ten minutes from me - going to see him at a small venue here in a couple months actually).
There's been a few of his Akkermans kicking around. The last one I saw was the original that was refinished in honey blonde that he auctioned off two years ago. Thanks to framusakkerman.net I think picking one up won't be that hard - except getting it past the missus...

"Baby, what's in the box? It's marked 'Cleared by German Customs'."

"It's just some of that European Spruce I was telling you about. Now, what can I make YOU?"

Cheers,
Warren

When I was 14 and had a broken leg thanks to ski jumping, I started noodling around on my Mama's old Hagtrom acoustic because I was bored. I played along with some old 45's, and in that pile of records was one with a song called "Blues Power" on the A side and "The Watermelon Man" on the B side. The record of course was by

ALBERT KING!!

I learned those licks by ear and heart, and when the cast was off later that spring I never went back to ski jumping, but I got an electric guitar instead! Yes, he was my fist guitar hero, and to this day I am grateful for that introduction to the instrument.

I've always wanted to try ski jumping, it's like I know it's gonna hurt, but what the hay. You only live once. Not many ski jumps round here tho.PaulB39073.719537037

Hey Paul, come on over, I'll take you to Granasen ski jumping hill, it is right in my back yard here in Trondheim!

I found no winter pictures of it, but actually you can go jumping in it during the summer too, it has artificial surfaces (porcelain or frost rail track on the inrun, plastic on the landing hill). With the crazy weather we have been having this year, the picture show how it looks now, believe it or not. For the first time in my life it looks like we will have no snow for Christmas

Lets see if any of the Aussies can pick him?

And no, it's not Jimmy Buffett

When I was a kid and we went to Norway, there was a ski jump that had a pool you go swimming in during summer. Your pic looks a lot like it but without the pool at the bottom. My mother was glad that we were there for swimming, I wanted to do ski jumping even then.

Albert's Blues Power was and still is one of my favorites along with this guy that was one of the first electric blues players.

Just to stop the suspense Grant

Dutch Tilders.

Arguably our finest acoustic blues guitarist.

Don't know if you remember but he released some
stuff with Kevin Borich. "The Blues had a Baby and they called it Rock and Roll"

At one stage he got Ian Noyce to build him an acoustic
with the spec " I need it really light and responsive,
with light strings but I want to play it like a threshing machine" Apparently he got what he wanted !!

Cheers

Bob

Started with Buck Owens and the buckaroos, Merle Haggard, then Elvis and the Beatles, Hard rock bands of the 70's, 80's and 90's to finally get to Howard Emerson, Tommy Emmanuel, Don Ross and good ole Country and Bluegrass bands!

I like it diversified!
